Tabula Rasa

But what's it mean...

First Appeared in Burnt Toast#9, 1991

Blood sucking creatures of the night,
Nocturnal spectres hiding from the light,
Cries screaming after every fright,
Eagerly awaited plight.
Apparitions from the pits of Hell,
Death plagues the streets in which they dwell,
Demented lust, the secrets they must keep,
Addicted to your blood...
At dawn they sleep.

          Slayer

Saint-Germain shook his head, reflecting that it was less than flattering to realise that his kind shared an aversion to running water with sheep.
          Path of the Eclipse
          Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

But the craving never goes away. The beasts of the field appease, but I am a huntress, and my natural prey strides through the steel prairies, rides the gold mountains of the cities, the neon caves of the towns.
There are wolves on all the hills, even the hills of glass.
          Sabella
          Tanith Lee

Well I've been living a categorical lie
Each last thrill the penultimate high
Just one more hit before I can die
Yellow teeth are snapping all around
Every morning as I wake from my bed
I find I'm yawning just a-scratchin' my head
If I were a Mustang, I think it's gone to my head
Mirror don't lie, mirror don't lie
Talk about a rolling stone
          Fall of Rome
          James Reyne

I'm after them all
Then came the hunger,
And the hunt's for the soul
Such a hunger,
That begins after dark, hides in the heart
Like a wolf that is waiting inside
          I Love the Night
          Chris de Burgh

I can't wait, I can't wait, no,
But I see a little light, in the shadows
One must hide when the sun gets higher
I don't know what this madness means
Here comes the night, the bedroom shadows
Candle lights,
I don't know where it's coming from
But I keep moving on,
Till the darkest star makes me want to
Try these wings, yeah, yeah.
Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)
          Lou Gramm

There's a crack in the mirror
and a bloodstain on the bed
Now you are a vampire,
and baby, I'm the walking dead.
I've got the ways and means to New Orleans
I'm going down by the river
Where it's warm and green
I'm going to have a drink, walk around
I've got a lot to think about, oh yeah.
          Bloodletting (the Vampire song)
          Concrete Blonde

I don't know where she comes from
She just wouldn't say
But we're going down to the graveyard
At the finish of the day.
She dresses up in black
and wears a red rose in her hair
I know she is a demon
But somehow I just don't care.
          Date with a Vampyre Girl
          Screaming Tribesmen

Also there was something vampiric about rock music. It must have sounded supernatural even to those who don't believe in the supernatural. I mean the way the electricity could stretch a single note forever; the way harmony could be layered upon harmony until you feel yourself dissolving in the sound. So eloquent of dread it was, this music.
          The Vampire Lestat
          Anne Rice

Blue masquerade, strangers look on
When will they learn this loneliness
Temptation heat, beats like a drum
Deep in your veins I will not
Love's little sister.

Cry little sister
Thou shalt not fall
Come, come to your brother
Thou shalt not die
Unchain me, sister
Thou shalt not bleed
Love is with your brother
Thou shalt not kill
Cry Little Sister (theme from The Lost Boys)
          Gerard McMann

It was many years ago that I became what I am
I was trapped in this life like an innocent lamb
Now I can never show my face at noon
And you'll only see me walking
By the light of the moon.
The brim of my hat hides the eyes of a beast
I've the face of a sinner, but the hands of a priest
Oh you'll never see my shade,
Or hear the sound of my feet
While there's a moon over Bourbon Street
          Moon Over Bourbon Street
          Sting

Twinkle, twinkle, little Tzar
How we wonder what you are.
Up above our heads so high
Like a vampire in the sky
          Rasputin

Oh yeah, snap, when she'd gotten her hands on his neck, and the blood came, it had been just fine, it was hamburgers and french fries and strawberry shakes, it was beer and chocolate sundaes. It was mainline, and coke and hash. It was better then screwing! It was all of it.
           The Queen of the Damned
          Anne Rice

After lunch, he went from house to house and used up all his stakes. He had forty-seven stakes.
          I Am Legend
          Richard Matheson
